Peter has over 30 years of experience as an executive and management consultant driving enterprise value in transportation, infrastructure, and logistics-intensive organizations.   He has supported clients across ocean shipping, intermodal terminals, cold chain logistics, truckings, railroads, and waste services, as well as helping shippers optimize their logistics and distribution networks.

 

He has supported infrastructure funds, private equity firms, and strategic investors on M&A strategy, commercial and operational due diligence, and enterprise transformation of portfolio companies.

 

He has consistently identified and delivered on profitability improvement opportunities across operations, SG&A, org design, distribution networks, market growth, pricing optimization, and sales force effectiveness. 

 

Examples of Mr. Appel’s client work include:

 

  • Developed operations improvement and EBITDA improvement plans for five maritime terminal portfolio companies for global infrastructure investor. Identified and achieved EBITDA improvements of 15+%

  • Created post-merger integration plans, supported end-to-end integration, and led performance improvement initiatives for one of largest U.S. aviation fixed based operators (FBO)

  • Led broad-based operational improvement program for major U.S. distributor to the restaurant and foodservice industry, including SG&A, warehousing, procurement, and pricing improvement

  • Supported post-merger integration between two of the largest U.S. private aviation fixed base operators (FBOs)

  • Developed detailed supply chain and logistics cost reduction plan to improve margin by $10 million for a US retailer, including initiatives to improve container-shipping strategy, network optimization, and warehouse operations

  • Developed comprehensive performance improvement program encompassing transportation, sales, operations, and labor management for leading North American solid waste hauler, to drive 12% EBITDA improvement

  • Led successful new distribution strategy for 5,000-store quick-serve restaurant chain, encompassing warehouse network optimization, improved partnerships with logistics providers, better improvement incentives and metrics, and enhanced risk mitigation approaches

 

 

Prior to joining LCS, Mr. Appel held senior positions at management consulting firms AlixPartners and Kearney.  

 

In addition, he headed the US Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration, where he led the development of a range of technologies to advance transportation safety and efficiency.

Mr. Appel has a Master of Science in Transportation and Aeronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a B.A. in Economics and Computer Science from Brandeis University.
