TRUCKLOAD AND INTERMODAL

Opportunities and Challenges:

The truckload and intermodal industries experienced e-commerce driven growth over the last decade. COVID caused a spike in demand for consumer goods, but post-COVID consumer spending has shifted back to services, in turn reducing the demand for truckload and intermodal transportation services. Labor shortages and risk of unionization by truck drivers and mechanics are an additional challenge but provide an opportunity to make existing workforces more efficient. Transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is another major challenge facing the industry that includes questions surrounding technological feasibility, financing of equipment, infrastructure required and regulatory burdens from federal and local governments. Despite challenges, opportunities to capitalize on nearshoring trends of industrial manufacturing from Asia to Mexico will benefit intermodal and truckload industries. The truckload and intermodal industries must invest in technology, improve operational efficiency, and diversify their services to remain competitive and meet the evolving needs of their customers.
